Non-Apple wireless adapter which a Mac sees as an Airport?

While browsing through a Mac interest group forum, I saw someone asking to be pointed towards a wireless n PCI adapter which a Mac/OS X system might recognize as an Airport device. Apparently some 3'rd party adapters have exactly ... or at least "close enough" ... internals as the Apple products and thus are treated as Airport devices by a Mac.

Or at least that's what implied by this person's question.

Figured it wouldn't hurt to also ask over here as well. I'm mostly just curious as I don't own a Mac desktop myself, only a notebook.
