nvram commit not working on 380.68.4 on RT-AC3200

I'm trying to do the following:

nvram set wl0_reg_mode=h
nvram set wl1_reg_mode=h
nvram commit
reboot

After reboot the settings have been lost. Any guidance please?

I think the nvram settings are reset on reboot. Put the commands into a script to be applied on startup?

You can make the changes to NVRAM but they won't have any effect.

Well that's certainly frustrating since it is Asus technical support who are suggesting this change to deal with ongoing flake wifi connectivity for iOS devices. Grrr any further ideas?
