Open VPN confusion

New Around Here
Hi,

I have an ASUS RT-AC68P that I just installed Merlin WRT on. Like the below video, I did this because I didn't want my entire network (already pretty slow) to go through the VPN and subject it all to slow speeds. I just wanted to use it for a machine or two.

Link to video:

I had no problems using my existing paid VPN service (Getflix) before upgrading the Asus Router to Merlin.

My entire Network was super slow though.

After upgrading to Merlin and adding rules, if I do anything "wrong" I lose the username and password that I enter and all other information that I enter.

It then claims that the ovpn file was not uploaded.

Finally, the screen flashes and it turns the service back off.

I am obviously missing an option or two, but there are too many options for someone like me and the above video is old.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

“After upgrading to Merlin and adding rules’“

Please explain exactly how you upgraded to Merlin, and detail the “rules” you added.

I think that would take several hours to articulate. Seems like I had to turn the service on before I uploaded the file. The interface still claims that no file was uploaded but the "on" button stays green now and I can add rules. Working so far.

I will return if I have trouble.

Hi
After you upload a file it then goes back to no file selected, as its done its job right?

I'd generally concur, but the order of operations must have been off in my case.

More importantly, I went back to my VPN client control settings today after noticing that the public IP on 2 of my network computers was now my ISP's again.

I found that the Service State was turned back off with no action taken by me.

If the VPN dropped, then I'd expect there not to be any traffic on either of these machines but instead traffic continued exposing my public ip because the Service State was turned off.

Any idea what can turn this service state to off like this?

Thanks.
