Is there a openvpn tutorial out on a site somewhere
that walks you through setting up openvpn?

See the Wiki. I posted a link there to a very easy to follow tutorial, as well as instructions on how to generate the certs on the router in case you aren't using Windows. It's for Tomato, but the settings are the same as in Asuswrt-Merlin.
