Orbi or Two RT-AC86U in AP mode?

I want to replace my Google WiFi system. I have ethernet in most rooms and a gigabit connection from ATT.

I ordered a $400 Orbi system from Costco and I am waiting on it but I am now concerned about the firmware issues people are having. It seems when it works, it is awesome. But the thing I want the most—wired backhaul seems to be giving it the most issues even with the latest firmware.

I am wondering if I should instead get two RT-AC86U and put them in AP mode (wired backhaul) or AiMesh. This should also cost me around $400.

What do you all think?

Orbi and Google WiFi are going to be similar there...

You can look at Orbi and AsusWRT AIMesh - Orbi is likely going to do better there - all things considered.

The Google WiFi stuff is going to be very similar - in many ways, it's more advanced than the solutions from Asus or Netgear, based largely on their experience with Google Fiber...

Hi. I am pretty happy with the speed of the Google WiFi but I find the software limited. I was hoping to do a router-based VPN and I also needed to block some sites from the router. It's port-forwarding is also more limited than your typical consumer routers.
