Parental control by application

pr2014

New Around Here
Hi, new to this forum after someone told me this is the best forums for wireless network DIYs.

I am getting a Asus RT68U unit and had a question about parental controls.

From the manual and posts here, I know I can restrict access to the internet by time of the day, day of the week etc. But here is what I would really like.

I want to restrict my son's gaming activities to certain times without cutting him off from the internet for school projects, email and other such necessary access.

Is there a way I can do this?

Alternatively, can I do something with QoS to make gaming unbearably slow during certain times/days?

With Windows 8.1 parental controls you'll have much more control than what Asus routers offer; but the only way I know to do what you want is by standing over his shoulder right now. :)

Thanks. I am going to try using the Network Services filter to black list certain ports during non-allowed hours. Not sure if that is the answer but I have blacklisted ports like 1119 (Diablo, WoW), 25565 (minecraft) from his PC so if his traffic on those ports is not allowed to the internet at certain hours, maybe it won't let play at thos times?

I use Squid proxy for all my parental controls. It allows me to set time by IP address along with domains. It may seem like overkill but based on the needs of the kids to use their school supplied computers I am able to keep them from going to YouTube, minecraft, etc. while still allowing them to hit the school systems applications.

If you have a USB drive attached to your router you can install Entware/Optware and the install the squid proxy from there. Then you can configure the browser on the computers to use the proxy.

Once you have the computers going though the proxy you can then start adding rules to the configuration files based on web sites, time of day, etc. It's a lot easier to edit the rules in Squid then to write a bunch of netfilter table entries.

Here is the link to the Squid website:
