Guidance to a remote storage noob

Hello to everyone,

I expect in the next days to receive a brand new ASUS RT-AC66U.

I'd like to use the remote storage capabilities of the router, to stream HD material between my wireless devices at home and even configure my own private cloud, if this is secure enough. It would greatly help me for my work.

I don't ask for step by step instructions for anything, just some guidance on what I should start studying.

I've read about the AiCloud, its convenience, but also the serious security issues back on Jan 2014. Is there a better, more secure way to have a private remote storage inside the house and over the internet?

...storage could be your NAS or as a more basic setup, just an USB disk attached to the ASUS.

If you want a more complete, cloud-style application, consider running owncloud, either on the ASUS (using entware/optware or chroot) or on a dedicated (mini-)server in your home.

For secure access from outside, I'd consider using the OpenVPN-Server in the ASUS to provide that function.

Anything you expose to the internet will attract hackers, probably from China, if they can find it; and they probably will find it. If all it takes is a user id and password to get to your private pictures, and there's no protection for number of sign on attempts, and/or the VPN method used is hackable (such as PPTP) then let's hope they're wholesome photos.

Set up an SSL based VPN that can only be accessed by certain devices with the proper certificates, and turn it off when not in use. OpenVPN is popular for this. I'm not familiar with current Asus firmware capabilities or what alternate firmware is available for your router if Asus can't support a decent VPN.

I use this NAS for all of my storage, works great for sharing files, streaming music and videos, and is secure. I would stay away from the USB disk drives, performance is an issue...
