Post-test Firmware Upgrade Question

Longtime reader, first-post n00b with a question here. I'm in the market to upgrade my failing, decade-old Linksys WRT54GS, and am comparing several wireless routers. One question keeps occurring to me though: how much performance improvement have you observed via a vendor firmware upgrade? Is it something like 0% to 5%, or is it truly significant (i.e. Asus RT-N16 routing performance increases to WNDR3700-ballpark)?

With rare exception, firmware updates from a manufacturer have no significant impact on performance, in my experience.
