pptp VPN problem on a dsl-n55u router

Hi

I have 12 basic pptp vpn setup's in different locations that all work fine using my win 7 laptop from home

On my latest install using a new DSL-N55U with latest firmware ( 3.0.0.4.376_2736 ) I have set up the identical basic pptp vpn but I am unable to connect to it via my win 7 laptop.
My iPhone connects every time, it is a little slow but I can see and change setting on the router with it.

my vpn crashes with error code 628, router log mentions Chap authentication problems.

I have also tried with a vista laptop which also can't connect

any ideas ?
