Problem connecting N66U to computer /modem

plato

New Around Here
I am using a Netgear DM111P modem. I can connect it to computer OK and set up is fine. Once I move the ethernet cable from the computer to the router it seems OK until I connect an ethernet cable from the router to the computer and run the wizard. I continually get the 'check the wired connection between the router and the computer. Cables are not the problem. Connections are correct. Have reset router and hard booted, no change. Ideas, suggestions?

That DM111P is ADSL modem/router combo, isn't it? You can't tandem two routers. You make up your mind how to use two routers together. NG router and Asus router.

Where are you seeing this message? Windows, the wizard, the router?

Try replacing the cable between the router and the PC and make sure it's at least Cat5e. The modem is only a 100Mbps device whereas the router is a gigabit device so any cables that work with the modem might not be sufficient for the router.

Failing that...
Unplug the modem and leave it unplugged.
Turn off the PC and the router.
Connect the PC to one of the routers LAN ports.
Turn on the router and wait 5 minutes.
Turn on the PC.

What is the status on the network connection on the PC? Is it connected? What is its IP address, is 192.168.x.x or is it 169.254.x.x?

I was seeing the message when trying to do the setup on the wizard.
I have tried multiple cables all Cat 5.
i followed your instructions and connecting the PC to a LAN on the router, the PC does not see a connection with a 'network cable unplugged'. If I connect it to the socket where the modem cable goes the PC gets interested but then displays 'no or limited connectivity'. The IP address is 192.168.0.1

I am beginning to think the router is stuffed. Tried connecting on a laptop and got the same response. I noted that the number 4 lan port light wasn't flashing as all the others were so did the connection on that port. Light started flashing. Initially it seemed hopeful with a 'connecting' sign then reverted to the 'problem with the wired connection'. Also found a Cat5e lead but it made no difference.

It does look like that might be the case. Before giving up though, try using the Asus firmware recovery tool in case it's a corrupted firmware.

Thanks Colin I'll give that a go looks like the last straw but maybe that's what it is as it isn't a hardware problem outside the router that I can see. Let you know how I get on. thanks.
