Problem with N66u (Latest Merlin Firmware) and QOS

Hi all,

I have been using the super stable merlin releases. And I have a requirement for QOS. I have set it up. Download set to MAX of my connection and Upload is at 80%. For some reason when I download I can't access the the router page at the same time. In fact I can't browse the web when I'm downloading something from steam for example. It's almost as if the QOS is overloading the router cpu? I have my computer set to highest priority along with HTTPS and Web browsing.

I've read some reports that QoS is not working right with 380.59 FW, the same on Samba.

Ok, what about previous firmwares? I was previously on john9527's 374.43 fork latest build and I had the same problem.

What so SMB shares are broken as well?

Can't tell, never used Johns Fork, make sure you RESET your router after flashing to avoid any issues and don't import any old configuration file, just configure it manually from scratch.

You should try first 380.58.

downgraded as suggested and had the same problem. The only thing that seems to solve the problem is turning off QOS. By doing this I can reactivate HW acceleration and the cpu goes down to 20% when browsing and transferring files to my NAS.

Needing additional features enabled with full routing performance is the reason for the latest routers with dual processors at 1.4GHz speeds and higher.

The RT-N66U was a great router and for many, still is. But that title has fallen many years ago for anyone with higher ISP speeds and/or higher requirements than just mere 'routing'.

thanks for your input. So it looks like I might need to upgrade for my needs. Is there a router you would suggest? Not too expensive but improved performance... With a dual core.

Does the n66u support port forwarding with hardware acceleration? I think that might be my problem. When I turn off upnp and then forward my ports manually. I think it might disable hardware acceleration and then in turn I see a drop in Lan throughput.

The RT-AC56U or higher. $50 to $100 when on sale, depending on your region. Same base hardware as an (original) RT-AC68U except for internal and one less antennae/stream (both 800MHz dual core processor).

The RT-AC68U (latest versions and revisions) have a dual core 1GHz processor and seem to be available at reasonable prices (wait for a sale, if need be). If these are available in your region, this would be your most bang for the cost. (25% faster processors, a third antennae and external antennae too).

Traffic that goes through a forwarded port isn't accelerated (it bypasses the CTF engine). But the rest of the traffic remains accelerated.
