PS3 and Traffic Management + Top Bar Falling Down on Mozilla

Good Morning!

I have recently acquired a black knight router.

It is working fine with Merlins latest firmware installed except for 1 issues that I remain stuck on.

I have a playstation 3, when traffic management is switched on on the router and I go to test playstation connection on the playstation, it hangs on the NAT section and then doesn't give an upload/download speed and gives a warning about router not compatible with IP Fragments.

If I turn off Traffic Management it all connects just fine.

I have all the ports on virtual server for the playstation as per my previous router.

I tried running the ps3 in dmz, makes no difference.

I tried adding all the ports and placing in highest for the ps3 under traffic management, makes no difference.

I would like to use traffic management, but I also want ps3 to connect properly.

Please Help :)

Again please help, these issues keep me awake at night.

Thanks

Breaking Dad

You're a funny guy merlin, I'll kill you last :)

Has anyone successfully resolved this issue with the ps3 and QOS yet?

I have read about a million forums today and am now going round in circles.

I think the real question here is does this cause you any actual issues?

For arguments sake I reset my router to default settings, changed only the basics and set my PS3 as DMZ and everything works fine.

Running the PS3 Internet test I got a Nat Type 2, download speed of 17.5Mbps and upload of 2.3Mbps (g wireless). Not only this but I have no issues connecting to or hosting any online lobbies in a variety of games (COD/GTA etc)

If you are still concerned reset and reconfigure. After awhile it becomes like second nature and takes less then a minute :p

EDIT; I just noticed your post was referring to QOS. In most cases it shouldn't really be needed unless you have a limited connection speed, and even then sometimes it causes more harm then good. Haven't personally tested the feature that much as I have a 115/5 connection.

Not that I'm aware of. Might be a side-effect of the QoS traffic management, possibly confusing the PS3 test. Hard to tell for sure without knowing what the PS3 is actually testing there.

Yes with QOS off it is fine.

I have a 100/10 cable connection.

You think it's best to disregard traffic management for now?

I use torrent over a vpn, while son is on cod and mrs on wow etc. I was trying to avoid creating lag for them. However I do limit upload to next to nothing on torrent and download rarely goes over 1mb as I'm using a german vpn from the uk.

btw merlin you caused me a night of poor sleep worrying about my melting GUI. So thanks for that :)

Honestly it shouldn't be a problem, unless you saturate your connection with multithreaded downloads 24/7 you shouldn't even notice a difference. I believe the feature was designed for people with ADSL type speeds. I honestly have a hard time pushing my connection unless I'm bench-marking or torrenting and even then my other devices still work great.

What would be good is if it was working I could then cap my upload on the ps3 to say 1mb and then I wouldn't get picked for hosting while playing ghosts / cod etc

based on some feedback in other firmware forums, this seems to be caused specifically by fragmented UDP packets. As its not an open part of the source, I dont believe this is something Merlin can affect.

That's actually probably something at the kernel level - QoS is handled by the Linux traffic classifier, not by Broadcom code. Unless there's a compatibility issue between Linux tc and Broadcom's closed source driver, which is a possibility.

I know that Tomato uses a different queue discipline than Asus, however that qd isn't available for kernel 2.6.36 used by ARM, and would also require doing quite some low-level changes to QoS that I'm not willing to do (too easy to break something there, and I'm not expert on Linux tc/qd).

I have had this issue for ever since i got my router was always like this with QOS nat2

Now i to have 100/25mbit connection atlest to my wired PC's ps3 on the other had barely gets 12mbit according to the few bandwith test that actual do work threw the browser with QOS on.

With it off it says about 20mbit I dont think either the browser test or ps3 own test are correct, that or the ps3 just cant handle those kind of speeds.

As for online connectivity goes it all work fine with QOS on Personally I think its the ps3 that cant handle those speeds neither can the psn network and i know it not the router causing the slow speed as my old router was the the same way. I seen 10mb's downloads on my pc ps3 speeds are more like 2mb's
