Regardless of whether it's deserved or not, if the US administration end up banning TP-Link products, one major impact on customers will be they will most likely lose any warranty support, as TP-Link would be unable, among other things, to provide replacements in case of a defective device. That's something to keep in mind if considering to buy a TP-Link product and you live in the US.

Challenge here is that consistency is not a hallmark of the current US administration, so who knows what might happen.

wouldn't Asus also be a candidate

Asus is a 100% Taiwanese company. The US administration is banning based on nation location/ownership, not on the (reported) products flaws. It's is purely a political decision, it has nothing to do with product security, except they use that as an excuse to justify their decisions.

In the past, when there ware serious security issues, the FTC acted by imposing fines. That is the proper way to handle it.

All they are doing it showing their ignorance. Those people need to educate themselves in the significant distinction between mainland China (run by a communist government) and Taiwan (run by a democratic government).

I have no reason to believe that TP-Link should be avoided purely on a security basis. No other country (to my knowledge) is considering a ban on their products.
