R7000 and IPv6

RogerSC

Part of the Furniture
I posted my review of the R7000 a while ago, noting that when I rebooted the router I lost my internet connection. I've now gotten the replacement router and have found out what triggers this problem. When I have IPv6 enabled and in use, and reboot the router, the internet connection doesn't come back up. When I have IPv6 disabled and reboot the router, the internet connection is fine.

So I've added this to my Netgear bug report...we'll see what they say about this firmware problem. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to keep the router, since otherwise it has been solid for me, and they got to fix this firmware bug *smile*.

I don't reboot very often with any consumer router. I tend to power cycle. Sometimes I'll even power cycle both the modem and router.

If you have a cable modem, try unplugging it for 20 minutes. And then see if you still have the problem when rebooting.

I know a lot of people that unplug their cable modem for 20 minutes (and remove battery backup if applicable) for 20 minutes before installing any new router or when changing routers.

Anyway, hopefully you can power cycle instead of reboot as a workaround.

Power cycle is a reboot, too, same net effect. And I've reset my router several times, that's the only way that I can get my internet connection back when I have to power cycle or reboot without resetting and manually reconfiguring the router when I have IPv6 enabled. So I'm pretty satisfied that I understand what's going on at this point.

Thanks.

Thanks for volunteering to be a test fighter pilot on that brand spankin new router. You must have patience. I have no patience for brand new products. ;)

I'm a good tester, and enjoy doing it. I think that the RT-AC68U would have been a bit more than I wanted to take on at this point, but the R7000 is basically functional, and in fact mostly works really well for its age *smile*. Now I'm shopping for a couple of wireless-AC adapters. I'm looking for a desktop one (the Asus looks good), and a USB 3.0 one for my main laptop. Seems to be a choice there at the moment, between Asus and Linksys. I'm more favorably disposed towards Asus hardware than Linksys at this time, so you can guess which I'll choose *smile*.
