recovering from NAS/RAID failure

New Around Here
I'm thinking of purchasing a NAS - mostly to replace the USB drives I use for backups. But one thing which concerns me is the ability to access the data in the case of a failure of the NAS itself - especially if using RAID5. (My experience restoring some backups written in a proprietary fomat has taught me never to entrust my data to anything which can't be read by a standard PC.) Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) recovering data when the NAS dies? What about RAID1 versus RAID5?
