Relocate router

New Around Here
Hey,

I'm having my home electrics redone this week and as a part of this, i'm having cat6 put around the house. My router is currently on the table in the hallway by the frontdoor as this is where my BT Master Socket is. Ideally I would like to relocate the router to be in a cupboard upstairs where my new Unraid server will live.

What's the best method of connecting the router to the master socket if located upstairs in the cupboard?

1 Gbit connection via CAT6 cable from BT Master Socket to router, would be my suggestion...

I do the same between my main router and the Access Point -- only that it has an additional switch in between as I need more connections then the 2 default connections in my office room.

The master socket is not ethernet it's just a standard telephone outlet with a filter connected. This is where i was getting stuck with figuring out a solution.

I would still go for CAT6 cable - but then from the router to a new Access Point upstairs (as I do).

But the master socket only has an RJ11 socket on it.

Were you meaning to leave the router where it is and then have a secondary access point upstairs?

Would that be a better solution over moving my existing router upstairs? I was trying to get away from having the device downstairs.

Would something like this work? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MRT9DBR/?tag=smallncom-21

I am having a cat6 cable put between the cupboard upstairs and the area where the master socket is so this adaptor would physically connect the two but my question is, would it work as I would be plugging in RJ45 back into the router and not the rj11 which it currently uses?

Just have your electrician run a cable from your existing location to the new location and install an RJ-11 jack in the new location and then splice the old cable to the new or use a coupler. If your electrician has experience doing telephone and data work he can easily do this.

Another option is to have your electrician run a new cable from where your demarc is to the location where you want the router to be.

I assume you have a data service delivered over some type of DSL from your telco. If that is the case you only need wire with 4 conductors 2 pair between your demarc and the RJ-11 jack where you plug your router in. The other 4 conductors 2 pairs in Cat5E or Cat6 cable won't be needed or used. The electrician will probably use 4 pair data cable just because it is easier to only carry one type of wire for any type of communications wiring.

In quickly looking at the adapters you listed in your post I think they are used where all the jacks have been wired for data and you want to run phones without repinning jacks from data to phone.

So, looking around it looks like if I want the router upstairs, I need to use the following two items:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N6WN3YZ/?tag=smallncom-21
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MRT9DBR/?tag=smallncom-21

The first will go from the master socket to the new rj45 wall socket

then in the cupboard I use the second item to go from the cat6 cable to the rj11 on the router.

Sound correct?
I've done exactly that on my cat5e ethernet and it works perfectly with no effect on performance.
