Repeater mode - help please!

I have two Asus RT-N66U's. I work in the 2nd floor of my house and my router is on the ground floor. Connectivity over 2.2 and 5Ghz isn't proved to be a problem but I have a large server hosting guests which I use for work. The server is connected to the router using powerline which tends to be awful. This means that the only to connect to the various guest on the hypervisor is from my laptop to the router via wifi and from the router to the hypervisor over powerline.

I bought a second router to try and get repeater mode set up and with the view that I would put the second router upstairs and my laptop would connect to it via wifi (or wired) and the server connect to the same router. This would remove the need for powerline and avoid drilling holes in walls to run cable up the outside of the house upstairs.

I have struggled to set up repeater mode and desperately would like to find someone who has done it and is kind enough to share their config.

It's all OK. The first time I tried setting this up I was using the same PC and I think I had problems with IP addresses. On this attempt I have got it working and it couldn't have been easier.

I noted on my main router (down stairs) that I had dual WAN enabled, probably a hang over from the previous attempts so I disabled that. I then plugged the second router into another laptop via Ethernet and configured the SSIDs to differ from those downstairs. Quite simply I then went to administration - repeater mode and selected the 2.4Ghz wireless channel and entered my password.

After about 5 minutes it completed and the default gateway on the laptop has now changed to the IP of the router downstairs, or the IP address of the upstairs router has changed to match what the router downstairs is/was?

I wanted to see whether I could set up guest network that could be used purely by the two routers but this is not possible.

Anyway I'm happy and hopefully this will stop my broken connections with my servers.
