Restart USB modem on failed ping

I need a script that will run often, ping a reliable website, and reset my USB modem if the ping fails.

The only high speed service available at my house is LTE through a USB modem. I really don't want to purchase another USB modem, but the one that came with the company just stops transmitting and receiving data randomly. When I reset it, it works again for a day or so and needs resetting again.

The service itself actually works really well when it's up. The USB modem is some off-brand thing so I have no shell access to it. I need a script that will actually restart the hardware itself.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I have the RT-AC68U running stock firmware. I'm not opposed to upgrading to Merlin, but I still don't know which script would accomplish what I'm trying to accomplish.

An option that works for me is an ipswitch from the source linked below.

You can set it up to ping up to seven IPs. If you get no response from all of the selected IPs for a set number of times the ipswitch reboots what ever is plugged into it. It has lots of options and has worked very well for me.

Thanks for the tip, but I don't see how this would work for me. I have to have a way to bridge my USB modem to my router, and the USB modem is powered via the USB slot, not 120v. I do not want to reboot the router. The USB modem doesn't have an ethernet port--I'm running everything through the USB slot on the router.

not that easy.
Maybe with an USB-hub and a WiFi controlled power-supply switch. You have to search, there are some USB-hubs which will power off clients when its external 5V supply is interrupted.

Another thought you could test: plug your USB into USB3.0 port.
When it looses connection go to GUI and change USB3.0 to act as USB2.0 port.
Maybe this goes with an short power loss on the USB devices or make some reset of it.

You don't need an Ethernet port on the USB modem. You connect a LAN port on your modem to the LAN port on the switch.

The ipswitch comes in several different models with one, two or three AC power outlets. Unless you can find a script that meets your needs and forces a reboot of the USB modem you may have no choice but to turn off your route's power to automatically force the USB modem to reboot. The switch also allows you to schedule periodic restarts.
