Router issue with older modem

Redwings17

New Around Here
Recently, I purchased ASUS AC1900P router and have been experiencing some problems with wireless connection.

Previously, I have been using a modem provided by Comcast and a router Netgear N600. I didn’t have a connection issue, but the internet speed was down significantly recently. So, after I connected modem to computer directly and got a good speed, I decided to replace the router.

With the new router, I get the speed the Comcast promised to provide with the desktop, and a little slower speed, but still better than previous router with laptop. However, it seems like it drops internet signal from time to time, maybe once an hour(using 2.4 GHz). Also, it doesn’t recognize printer immediately. It takes some time to make a printer work. (when I click print, printer status is offline, and then eventually it will print out material).

So, I went to BestBuy and talked to someone.

They told me that it could be modem issue. My modem is about 4 years old, and they said older modem doesn’t work well with newer router. They recommended replacing the modem.

So, I am just wondering whether it is true that older modem with newer router produces the result like this all the time or this is just ASUS router issue.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What model printer? How did you set up the 2.4GHz wireless on the router? I don't think it is modem problem. Does your neighborhood have many wireless signals? Did you pick best channel you could? How is your signal strength at the printer, or your PC? Did you check the router log?

It is canon MX432 I have owned for a few years. I believe my laptop and printer both have just 2.4 capability. So, I don't think I had to choose the channel. It just seems weird to me because I didn't have any issues like this with older router.

You haven't answered any of my questions.

I live in apartment complex. So, I believe there are many wireless signals available. When I set up the printer with router, I actually follow the menu on the printer. It says I need to push WPS button on the router. That's all I did. So, I don't think I chose 2.4 intentionally.
By the way, I am not sure how I can check the signal strength at the printer or router log.
Thanks!
