Router recommendation for TWC MAXX

numpsay

New Around Here
Long time lurker looking for help!

I'm looking for a router recommendation that can keep up with saturating TWC's new Maxx tiers.

I would like to stay away from a pfsense build or similar, but the options I've tried simply can't keep up.

I've tried the following:

Mikrotik RB750G (3 yrs old, little guy would if he could)

Ubuquiti EdgeRouter - inconsistent DL speeds, don't want to deal with firmware testing.

Asus RTAC68U - I want to love this router, but deal with all the firmwares to get it to perform is a nightmare. Every firmware fixes something, breaks another.

Netgear AC1900 Nighthawk - total junk, why even try.

Any help is appreciated.

If you had great success with the Mikrotik I would suggest model RB2011UiAS or model RB1100AHx2

For the Ubiquiti, I personally have an ERLite-3 at home that is able to saturate a 500mb/s symmetric FIOS line. This is on firmware 1.6 stable. No idea why you shouldn't be able to do the same.

Other options:
Linksys LRT224 or LRT214 have both worked for me on TWC and RR cable lines of both 100mb/s and 200mb/s

Fast ethernet excluded, and baring some select older Mikrotik boards, you really shouldn't be seeing any bottlenecks using to the models you listed... even if you're at the theoretical highest speed of Maxx (300mbps). I'm assuming you began your troubleshooting by testing line speed connected directly to the modem, so you can confirm you're seeing the speed drop once a router is introduced?

Echoing cloud's thoughts, any edgerouter model should be able to put up at least 750mbps, even with a few firewall rules enabled, as should most late-model gigabit MikroTiks, and even the R7000 or AC68U, lackluster firmware notwithstanding of course.

If you feel you must, try a Mikrotik CRS or even CCR series. If you still don't see line saturation, then I can almost guarantee you it's an issue with your modem, the line, or something other than the router itself.

My old setup was mikrotik-->ubiquiti but I have to go 5hz due to being in a building and everyone in my building has wifi and multiple devices using wifi direct which kills my 2.4ghz performance. My unifi died so I've been forced to try other options. After that my 750g started behaving erratically so I'm basically back to square one. Find another rock solid router and bite the bullet and get a higher than consumer grade AP.

I've ruled out the cable modem / line since connecting to my I7 machine (and macbooks) always saturates with no issues once I hammer it with usenet, speedtests, etc. Plus there was an issue before connecting to my local cmts but TWC fixed it

The Asus works well on one firmware, then struggles on another. I've just given up on it since each firmware introduces more issues on wifi (range/performance etc). It had all these great reviews but I've had issues with finding the right firmware. Something always breaks.

My old mikrotik is supposed to be gigabit, but doesn't seem to be able to handle usenet ssl connections over 120mbps.

I'm giving the edge router another shot with the newer firmware, I just love their company.

If that doesn't work I'll stick to mikrotik and get one of the models suggested above.

Seems like you have a good handle on the routers. I don't think you can go wrong with ubiquiti or mikrotik -- both are miles beyond anything in the consumer segment, but you already know that.

Any idea what you'll do for wifi? I know both UBNT and MT have 5Ghz options. I've also had good luck with EnGenius (Senao). On the other end there's always Ruckus, Aruba, Aironet, etc. but I bet you're not aiming for that price point...?

Not sure. Currently I'm using a borrowed unifi but sooner or later I'll have to return.

I've had no luck with several consumer grade devices. Even before getting to the asus I tried a bunch of netgears and linksys routers. All junk.My original setup went almost 3 years without any hiccups until the mikrotik started to go. I'd ideally want stability over anything else, so no more franken-devices.

I'm thinking just going ubiquiti since I trust them. But $300 is steep for just an AP with AC.

If I can get a solid firmware for the Asus, I might keep it as just an AP.

DO NOT GET THE UAP-AC
As much as I love to use pretty much everything else they make (barring the unifi router and unifi switch), the UAP-AC is not reliable around 10%-20% of the time. When they work, they work. When they don't we find the only way to get them to work is swap out for a new unit.

UAP is great,
UAP-LR is great
UAP-PRO is great
ERLite-3 is great

Get something like 2x Asus RT-AC56u/RT-AC66u or 3x Edimax BR-6478AC or Engenius ESR1200 routers and use them as access points.

You do not need to spend more than $130 per router/AP

I would recommend the 850Gx2 which is a dual core PPC router for the cheaper line. If budget isnt an issue try the 16 core CCR at least.

I use an ASUS AC68U with merlin firmware as wireless AP. After adding a usb fan and overclocking it to 1.4Ghz it has never failed.
