router-to-router connection for WHS restore

I would like to ask how best to approach a difficult fix. WHS backup and restore can only happen over the same LAN, but it has been hinted that a router-to-router permanent connection would work for this to work. Of course, the restore media ( disk or usb ) would need to be at the remote computer. With many folks sending their son/daughter off to college, restore becomes crucial.
How would it be best to setup a connection ?

A properly configured VPN should place both ends of the connection in the same subnet. But this can be tricky to set up.
