RT-AC3100 stability issues

Before going to merlin(just a few days ago) my 5ghz network would drop out maybe once a week. I've read a lot of great things about merlin so figured I should give it a shot. I've tried the latest 2 firmwares(384.16/17) and my wifi stability is awful. Basically drops out multiple times an hour. Do you think it's a settings issue, or maybe there's something physically wrong with my router? Thanks for the help!

Generally speaking, you plug it in, turn it on, and you have WiFi. Maybe your router is defective.

Lol well of course that's how it should work! And yes I did a factory reset of all settings and didn't restore any old backups.
