Ok, so anticipating the answer, I went ahead and reloaded my old config file....and dropbear is still running, and so is SSH. *sigh* sometimes I hate my chosen profession.... o_O

I hope you don't regret that decision too soon! Quick, before this happens again to you, write down/do a screen save of all your customizations. :)

Ok, so to close the loop - finally got around to doing an M&M config, and dropbear is running now with the latest firmware. Not sure why the old config was jacked up, but I'm able to SSH now.

So....is there anyway to decrypt and read the backed up cfg file, short of backing up current config and reapplying? I had a few static assignments and some other network tweaks/settings I'd like to put back without relying on memory. ;)

We used to have an excellent backup and restore tool but it no longer works, or more accurately, it no longer should be used.

But have a look here:

By the time you’ve read and digested all that, you could have done it the hard way 20 times over, so, unless you’re doing this fairly frequently, you might want to wait until one of the resident coders produces an up-to-date backup and restore tool.

Screenshots have been taken :) I was in the process of doing that when it occurred to me to check and see if something in the reset fixed it. I also saved the stripped-bare config, so if it does start glitching out, it's an easy thing to nuke and reflash with a completely basic config....at least until the next firmware :p

Being a part-time code monkey....do you happen to know if the source for that tool is available, and what problems it has? I might be able to hack something up...

And the thread is here:

https://www.snbforums.com/threads/user-nvram-save-restore-utility-r26-2.19521/

John, the developer, is still very active on the forum so if you have any technical questions you could send him a PM.

And if you do knock up a new version, there are many on this forum that would be most grateful to use it.

The biggest issue will be tracking the relevant nvram variables for each model, and f/w versions (and then maintaining it)
