RT-AC66R: VPN file copy disconnecting network

ckaczor

New Around Here
I recently replaced my router (an old WRT54G) with a RT-AC66R and have been having trouble with getting disconnected whenever I copy a file over a VPN connection to the network at work.

My home network has a bunch of systems connected to the router and one of them makes an MS VPN connection to the work network across the country. Whenever I copy a decently sized file (generally 50 to 300 MB) over the VPN connection all of the systems on my home network will lose internet access. It doesn't happen right away but it always happens for anything over a small file.

The system in question is running Windows 7 64 bit (in case that flavor of VPN matters somehow) and I don't really have any idea what is running on the work side.

In one case the file I needed was also available publicly. When I tried to download it using the VPN connection I had this issue. When I disconnected the VPN and downloaded it using the public internet it worked fine.

All of this worked fine on my WRT54G but that's dead and the new router is far better for everything else.

Is this potentially covered by the "crash on VPN/NAT Loopback access of LAN devices" mentioned in the fixes on Merlin? I'm planning to try that later when I can take the router down for a bit but kind of wanted to get the ball rolling just in case. =)

Thanks!

No, that fix had to do with people running a VPN server on the router itself. Asus has also fixed that problem quite a few months ago.

Bah - I was afraid of that. =)

Any other thoughts? Are there some logs or something I could look at? None of the system logs seemed to be useful.

Is the issue over wired or wireless?

Try to go with the simplest configuration possible. Disable unneeded features such as Download Master or QoS if you had enabled them, and test again.

Also, is your network still using the same subnet as with your old router? I.e., are your IPs still within the same range as before, like 192.168.1.xxx? If not, try changing it back, in case your subnet might conflict with the remote subnet.
