New Around Here
Hello. I bought a laptop recently, the asus g75vx, which has the asus pce-a66 802.11ac wireless adapter inside of it. Today I just picked up the asus rt-ac66u router. Everything set up correctly, the signal was much better than my old router, and speeds were very fast. HOWEVER:

When I connect to the 5ghz band network I created on my asus laptop, the windows wireless tool which I connect with, says that the radio type is 802.11n. Also, when I run the inSSIDer utility, it displays the 5ghz network as being 802.11 with a 450 max transfer rate. I am trying to get the 802.11ac working properly!

On the router setup page, I have the wireless mode set to auto (although i have tried N+AC as well). Basically almost everything is on the default setting. I tried downloading the asus utility for the pce-a66 adapter card, but when I try to run it, it says I don't have the wireless adapter installed on my computer yet.

PLEASE help me getting 802.11ac set up.

Make sure you have the 5 GHz band set to 80 MHz (or 20/40/80).

If you had previously configured the same SSID for a 802.11n router, then I recommend deleting the wireless profile on the laptop and reconnecting again. Some people also recommend using a different SSID, which will have a similar effect.

Don't rely on Windows telling you if it's 802.11n or ac - Windows probably cannot tell the difference between either technologies. Rely specifically on the reported link speed instead.

Same with InSSIDers - I'm not sure if it can properly recognize 802.11ac.

the link speed says 866.5 Mbps, so i think that means it is working, right? Although, this number goes down when I bring the laptop upstairs : (. Thank u for the help

That's correct. Anything above 450 Mbps (triple stream) or 300 Mbps (dual-stream) will be 802.11ac.
