RT-AC66U USB Disk Drive for Windows and Mac Backups

New Around Here
I have a 1TB USB drive connected to my AC66U. I want to use this drive for backups for both myself and my gf. I use Windows 7 but she uses OSX Yosemite.

What file system would be ideal for this situation? I formatted it to exFAT since Windows and Mac can read this, however this file system is not supported by the router.
