Im using the firmware restore utility and it flashes successfully but the router NEVER boots. Tried clearning NVRAM while in recovery mode still wont boot. Can flash it back to stock perfectly fine though.. I'm using the AC68U tomato firmware.

Any ideas?

That model is not supported by Tomato.

I can confirm that AC68U Kille72/Shibby Tomato firmware will not boot up on RT-AC66U B1 hw ver A1. According to leds it tries to boot up, but then ~1min into bootup crashes and reboots.
Nevertheless, Merlins AC68U firmware boots up fine on this 2x1000mhz AC66U_B1_A1.

Indeed, I tried doing the exact same thing you did last night, except that I tried flashing the Advanced Tomato firmware instead of Shibby Tomato. I think if you read further, you'll notice that the Tomato firmware for AC68U cannot be loaded on newer revisions of the AC AC68U such as the C1, which has a similar CPU to the one the AC66U_B1. If you're thinking Shibby is going to support C1, then forget it. So, we're basically limited to Merlin's firmware and DD-WRT.

I actually placed an order from for the AC66U simply because I wanted a router that has many third-party options. Instead, they sent me AC66U_B1 (H/W ver B1). I considered returning it, but decided to keep it as it was slightly more capable machine and also supported Asus Merlin.

I would just like to know from Merlin why the Asus firmware for the AC68U worked on the AC66U_B1, whereas Tomato firmware that works on the AC68U doesn't work on AC66U_B1. It's like saying, a = b and b = c, but a ≠ c.

Because Asus uses an upgraded SDK that supports the new hardware revision - Tomato's SDK is too old.
