RT-AC68P failed to read the sim card

Trying to set up my new router with my android 4g phone connection. WAN set to USB. USB Mode Enabled. USB Device: Android Phone. Apply
Then I connect the phone to the 3.0 USB port and turn on USB Tether. It shows at the top right corner a green USB icon = Samsung android modem and another green icon that looks like a sim with a circle/slash mark= failed to read the sim card. My phone plan has unlimited hotspot. I know the tethering works because I can connect to my Linux laptop and it works fine

What application? I made the changes in the router in the USB 3G/4G section.

yes the wan is on usb
