RT-AC68U can't change firmware from 384.5_alpha1-g91229ac

Every time I try to change the firmware on my AC68U from 384.5_alpha1-g91229ac it goes through the process but when completed it always shows up as 384.5_alpha1-g91229ac. I have tried all of the other alpha versions as well as the new beta version RT-AC68U_384.5_beta1.zip. I have also tried going back to 383 versions and none of them will load. I do not want to revert to the built in version because this is the T-Mobile special version and the process is long to get back to an RT-AC68U.

I am not trying to discuss the conversion process, but if this problem a no-no because of a TMO conversion then sorry.

The root partition is always "full" because it's in ROM.
