what is clients that can be connected at once on the rtacn68u at once? We have a lot of devices at home, currently at 12-13 which is about to increase even more

With the RT-AC68U you should be able to handle at least 20 clients on each band. With about a baker's dozen, you're fine for now and the foreseeable future.

Of course, it also depends on what those clients do, and, the level of service your ISP offers you too if the main use of those clients is connecting and interacting with the 'net.

How are you doing with those current clients? Are all devices getting the bandwidth they need.

Connecting is one thing. Satisfactory operation is quite another. The latter depends on the client and application mix. Lots of 1x1 devices simultaneously streaming YouTube, etc. will eat up available bandwidth very quickly.
