RT-AC68U vs AC56U for openvpn

New Around Here
Hi.
This might be a question for merlin as he seems to have a lot of info on asus' new routers. I'm looking to get a new router to use with a private vpn service.

I know the AC56U is available now but will there be significant advantage in waiting for AC68U for better openvpn performance as I am on a fairly good 70 down/15 up connection.

Presumably the cpu is biggest factor in gettting good speed over vpn?

Thanks.

Hard to tell since the RT-AC68U isn't available yet, so the final specs aren't known. I know that Asus mentionned a Turbo mode on the RT-AC68U, but there was no mention of actual clock rates yet. There is no official ETA on availability either.

To tell the truth, I wanted AC68 as well, but for the things to get to the shelves at a reasonable price after they have been announced on CES, etc., just takes forever!

If you are planning to upgrade your network to proper AC, perhaps it is worth waiting. In my case I am not planning to upgrade - and with my current mix of 2.4 and 5GHz clients cranking up transmit power to 180mW stabilized the existing wifi connections at 240-300, so I am satisfied, at least for now.

Some indications were that AC68 will have the same CPU as AC56, but factory set at 1GHz, hence it will have better performance at stock clocks. BUT - until ASUS really puts the routers on the shelves, we won't know for sure - just like Merlin said.

Saying that, I am planning to start a new thread on modding AC56 - I decided to risk almost $200 (after tax) and add a cooling fan directly on the back of my overclocked router :). I doubt if AC68 will have better VPN performance than OC-ed AC56 - but wireless should be much better.
