i am looking all over the GUI but I cannot find reset to factory defaults on the
RT 86u

thanks , I looked at it 5 times and missed it , these old eyes are getting tired

better use WPS button while powering on, often works much better than software reset.

The first four will get your router to a good/known state. Once it's there, the last link will give your router superpowers you never knew it had!

Okay, it will at least let you use a spare USB drive as a swap file. But it can offer much more too.
