New Around Here
Hi,
I just updated my GT-AC2900 (similar to RT-AC86U) to the last firmware 3.0.0.4.386.48453, but can't access web interface anymore.
And the router doesn't give any IP to my computer. Reset doesn't seem to do anything.
Just in case I updated to the previous 3.0.0.4.386.46092 using the restoration tool (which tells me "uptated bla bla successful, reboot", but it still the same.
Do you have any idea what could be the issue and how to solve it ? Is it compulsory to have WAN connected ?
Thanks

Already done, multiples times. I don't understand. It accepts the restoration tool update, but nothing happens after.

Try this:
1 - try to reset via WPS button, instruction is here: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1039078
2 - connect to router via a confirmed good cable, not wireless;
3 - wait some time, i.e. at least 5 min.;
4 - open a web browser - preferably in a private tab/incognito tab, whatever it is called in your preferred browser;
5 - navigate to http://router.asus.com OR http://192.168.1.1
Should be working!
192.168.50.1 for this router.
thanks for your answer. Still nothing.
The issue is that it doesn't respond to anything. Even the DHCP doesn't seem to work (impossible to reach).
Yes I tried with 192.168.50.1 and 192.168.1.1, but there's no response at all.
Is there some case of sudden death when upgrading ?

I never had GT version, but are the lights in front acting like normal? You know what they look like during boot and after, right?

I have never paid attention to it in fact (this is my holidays router). The front case is a one piece multiple rainbow light, and it still shines. But that's only thing the router /street lamp is doing now ! ;) I wonder if I'm not going to change it, I don't know how to solve that issue.

ASUS router Hard Factory Reset - Method 2

1. Turn the router off.
2. Press and hold the "WPS" button and turn the router on.
3. Power light is on (keep holding the WPS button).
4. Release the WPS button after the power light is off.
5. Reboot your router by manually pressing the power button.
This is the procedure for this router, at the link above provided by another poster.

It accepts the restoration tool update, but nothing happens after.
What do you mean by this?

Is your computer indicating that it has connected to a router, either by Ethernet or wifi? Do you see the default wifi ssid after the router has been reset and booted? Have you got yourself onto another network - neighbour's wifi, hotspot etc..? Is your ethernet nic disabled or does it have some static configuration settings?

I succeeded in using the restoration tool (or it seems, cause its final message is positive), but nothing happens after.
I suppose the router reboots, but I don't see any wifi network, doesn't give any IP address whatever the pc connected by ethernet, the router doesn't answer to ping. So I think it's a case of sudden death, maybe a flash memory issue.
I don't know what's the brand, but I read some issue with the Macronix on the last netgear routers, and Asus seems to have some Macronix chip too according to Wikidevi.
And it is not under warranty anymore.

No SSID, no ethernet, nothing. The router is completely silent. Even when using the reset button it doesn't change anything that's not normal. I just took my old netgear and it's ok for now, I think the asus is dead, and clearly I won't buy that one anymore.

The reset button method is known to not work. Even Asus acknowledges that.

Try unplugging everything from the router. Including the power cord to it and from the wall AC. Leave it for at least two minutes or more without power and with its power switch to 'on'.

Then, see if doing the appropriate method below gets it working again (you may need to do it more than once).

And I agree. Do not pay twice for the same router. ;)

Thanks, I already tried that method, and still absolutely nothing... Maybe it has an issue with the nand chip.
It's a 2020 Covid Special Edition :oops: , and I won't be surprised if Asus like the others built some stuff with not so good quality chip.

These machines are b*tches. At least rt-ac86u is for sure. I remember that mine behaved similarly after fw upgrades and I had to rinse/wash/repeat several times until success ...
You say that firmware restoration tool seems to succeed ? So try to do it again but with the oldest firmware you can find.
You can monitor the whole process with wireshark while doing it - this could give further insight if there is real communication between PC and router and if things really happen in the background or not.

Thanks but I can't spend too much time on that (and I'm not a specialist too). I just put aside the router and took my old netgear currently.
I think I'm going to wait that chip supply chain to be ok before buying anything else (I heard maybe 2024)
