RT-AC86U not allowing login with just set credentials

Just received my new RT-AC86U and I'm facing a very weird problem: as soon as I get logged out I cannot log back in with the credentials I have just set. I am sure I am typing every symbol correctly, and I have tried both with the original firmware and AsusWRT Merlin - same result in both cases. Any ideas what could be causing this? Should I send it back?

Dumb question, but you did hit the apply button once the changes were made? Otherwise it's still the default login

Password symbols? Maybe some are not compatible? Have you tried a simple password to test?

I did hit apply, and I'm using exactly the same combination as on the RT-AC68U, which works just fine. And the settings are recorded, it works if I log out and back in manually, but as soon as it logs out because of time-out or when changing some settings - I'm completely locked out. The credentials I set don't work, the default ones neither. Will try with something basic as abcd1234 or something.

Keep in mind passwords are limited to 16 chars. If you tried to use a longer password, try entering just the 16 first characters.

Also, some special characters can cause problems with the webui.

SSH didn't work either, same problem.
The password was 7 characters, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I have set a new password, 8 characters without any special ones (just alphanumerical), seems to be working for now, will see if it still working tomorrow.

The weird thing is that same credential have worked on the AC68U (and the AC56U before that) for years, but not on the AC86U...

could you tell us exactly which caracters (in different order) for SSID and PW you have used than I could test them on my 86U.

At this moment I have identified the quotation mark (") as creating problems, I removed it from my password and now it seems to be working fine.

It would be good to know if this is the behavior of all AC86U routers or just mine.

Does seem odd that the box lets you type in illegal characters and then apply goes through without error

I think there is no need for testing " as it is known special caracters make problems especially this.
That there are no hints of allowed characters nor any check is the real tragedy.

It seems very odd that this same symbol works on older models, but not on this one. It is also very inconvenient that there is no way to find out, except by testing, which characters are allowed and which are not. It is obvious that one would want to use characters as special as possible in order to make the password more difficult to crack, at least that is my tactic.

!@#$%^&* most likely ok to be used, but it depends on the coding language used and how the character is used.

" is the worst to use as it's commonly used in programming language and can protentially cause issue.

here is a short list for the ambiguous characters: { } [ ] ( ) / \ ' " ` ~ , ; : . < >
by using a password generator, it should help you to avoid create those unusable password
