RT-AC87U - 380.62_1 - after restart router, WAN goes from 1000 to 100 duplex

Hello,

Can anyone tell me what could be the reason behind this problem?
The only thing that fixes this behavior is unplugging the router and plugin again.
Restart or power off from button doesn't work. It will always goes to 100.

No, its not that. I checked the cable.
Besides, this only happens when I reboot the router without unplugging it from the outlet. If I unplug/plug the power cable then its ok, I have 1000 Mb on WAN.

If you power off the modem/ONT (at least 10 minutes or more), then reboot the router, then power on the modem/ONT, is the issue gone?

A funny thing I noticed after several hours with 1000 Mb on wan: the connection drops to 100 out of the blue. I found that out just now.
Sorry but I don't know what is ONT... I never saw one. My cable comes from outside ( i live in a flat) and is plugged directly in my router.

Update: If I unplug the WAN cable and plug it again I have 1000. After several minutes is back to 100.

It turned out it was a bad cable or poor contacts. The fact that throw me off was that I tested another router and that one worked the first time.
After twitching and switching the cable it finally gave in with the test router and the behavior was the same.
I cut half a meter from the cable and rewired it. Now its working fine.

Glad you found the problem. I myself took a whole day once to discover that the connector on a cable I made myself was not making a good connection when pluged in on my pc. Testing with the cable tester was fine, but once plugged in in the pc it was often failing.
After replacing the connector never had that issue again

Yep... just as I thought I figure it out it happened again. This time after 26 minutes.
Could be something wrong with the router?

The same problem is manifesting with the second router. So, 2 routers same problem.

Most likely a cable or jack issue then. 1 Gbps requires pretty good wiring quality, link rate can drop if there's too many issues with the connection.

You could try inserting a cheap Gigabit switch between the two devices. This usually only helps with compatibility issues, but it could possibly help in your case as well.

Thank you all for your replies. Finally, I opened a ticket to my ISP and they will send a team of "experts" to investigate this behavior.
I will come back with an answer about what will they uncover... hopefully the meaning of life.
If this fails too I will try your advice with a cheap switch. If this will fail also, I will downgrade my ISP subscription to 100Mb as I don't want to pay extra for a 500Mb subscription...
I think I covered all exits in this matter...

PS: What kind of switch can I buy? My connection is of PPPOE type.

It doesn't really matter that you use PPPOE, just buy a decent brand. Something like a NETGEAR ProSAFE GS105 or GS108 are good and cheap.

The Netgear switches ColinTaylor suggests are excellent choices.

But for a simple connection between the modem and router, a cheaper switch will do.

I have found the above switches in the $10 range. GbE performance at snack food prices (all I've bought have been running for the past two years or more now with no issues.

An inexpensive TP-Link will work just fine. It's what I use in my bedroom where my desktop and my development routers are. I have a Netgear managed switch as my main switch by the main router, however I'd have to say I've had more issues with it than with the TP-Link...

Good news... I think. The guy from my ISP who came to my house rewired both ends of the cable and changed the port in the main switch.
After that the router connected to 1000 and stayed like that. I will keep an eye on the connection for a couple of days to see if something changes...

I think its safe to say this is resolved. (I hope.)
