RT-AX86U lost WIFI speed.

hello Fellow members.
i been a long time member but for some reason my account got banned or canceled.
any way.
i have a RT-AX86U at home, that i had for 3 years now. i have my two main PCs on ethernet, and XBSX.
phones and tablets on wifi.
three weeks ago my wifi stop working. so i did , what you would normally do . disconnect power to modem and router. for 10mins.
when i connect power . my wifi came back but at a very slow speed. 120mb. Down, and 50mb up. i have a 1g speed down , and 900mb up..
that slow speed on wifi was for all wifi devices . hardwire is fine working perfect.
this what i did to try and remedy the problem.
update firmware. NO did not work.
Factory Reset Router. No did not work
install Marlin Firmware. No did not work.

so is my RT-AX86U done??

Power supply brick would be my suspect. Or power chips on the router motherboard. If you can replace the power brick, but watch out for getting the correct connector and polarity ( + / - ) on the connector. Any brick that provides the correct voltage and at least as many amps as the current one will do fine. Otherwise, replace the router with new.

It was just a thought, my thumbs up to @degrub was just to agree it is a possibility off the top of my head, given that it was working then it wasn’t; and your direct connection is OK. But it could be other issues.

The fact it dropped to 100 (120?) raises flags as to whether the port or cable router to ONT (modem) has gone wonky? Easy to check. If you can beg, steal or borrow a PS with the right specs and barrel size and polarity (more Amps OK, voltage must be correct), it’s an easy check. No need to go off and buy one.

Perhaps let us know FW you use, whether you use AICloud and the Asus App (quite a few recent malware issues reported associated with this) any changes you made? My ONT only has connectivity at one LAN port e.g.

[EDIT] Sorry, reading your post again, by “hardwire is ok”, you mean connected via Ethernet is fine, only Wi-Fi is slow?

Are you able to check if your devices are only connecting via 2.4GHz, maybe the faster but shorter range 5GHz went TU. Maybe the 5GHz antenna is loose or some other configuration issue, or that 5GHz radio went south?

i do not use AI cloud, or asus mobile app. as for the FW i dont remember what FW i was on when the issue occurred. now im on the latest FW. i didn't do any changes to setting before the issue started.
hardwire ethernet yes. works perfect.
when i did Factor reset i only connected two devices to wifi phone and tablet. phone on 2.4, tablet on 5gh. both same thing with slow speeds.

Just a quick question, after the factory reset you entered all your settings by hand, not uploading a saved config? (which would just reintroduce the previous issues if in the FW settings).

You’re right though, seems odd, nothing obvious sticks out. Hopefully someone else will look at what you’ve provided so far and have a light bulb moment.

[EDIT]. No new devices that emit 2.4GHz (doesn’t explain 5 though), you probably don’t have wifi analyzer results pre this issue ? Asking in case a massive radar just got planted in the Neighbour’s garden… which forced your channels along or changed band or something.

Just saw you posted a picture of your current PS, which is good as there are two different ones apparently…obviously if you can get the ACBEL compatibility will be more likely but that one could work, I can’t guarantee it and the site says often returned.

I’m not sure how it determines the 19.5V but Amps is fine and the M5 and M19 connectors seem to match one of the two options as noted on one of these threads. A 33W with 4.0mm * 1.35mm connector and a 45W with a 5.5mm * 2.5mm connector. Suggests your connector plug is 5.5mm x 2.5mm, so M5 in that Amazon link.
