RT-N66U + EA-N66 as an AP: IP conflicts

solo

Occasional Visitor
Hi there,

I have the following setup:

RT-N66U as my default router, hooked up straight to the cable modem. Running Asuswrt-Merlin. From there I have hardwired a TEG-S50g TRENDnet switch, and from the switch an EA-N66 to use as an AP.

CABLE MODEM>N66U>SWITCH>EA-N66

I also have a desktop hardwired to the switch.

Settings are as follows:

RT-N66U: IP:192.168.1.1; DHCP: on; IP starting: 192.168.1.3
EA-N66: AP mode; IP: 192.168.1.2; DHCP: off

Everything works well until I reboot the desktop. When I reboot the desktop, I get a normal IP, however my gateway changes to 192.168.1.2, and whenever I try to open up I website, I am redirected to the AP control panel.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks :)

This is normal behavior since your AP is located behind your gateway router (RT-N66U).

You would have to assign the default gateway of 192.168.1.1 (RT-N66U) into your EA-N66 and possibly a static DNS(s). I personally use OpenDNS content filtered DNS servers 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 or you could use similar like Google's 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4....

Thanks, somms. I will try your suggestion and post back once it has been running well :)

Hi,

Did you choose manual setup for the EA-N66 in AP mode?
I run the same setup (but with a RT-N16 in AP mode) and do not have this issue.

The difference is that I use the automatic LAN setup for the RT-N16:
Code:
Get LAN IP Automatically? = Yes
Connect to DNS Server automatically = Yes
Remember: The router in AP mode is just anonter device on your network (no more real router!).

With the right configuration of DHCP on the main router, verything works like a charm!

With kind regards
Joe
