Rt-n66u & ps3

New Around Here
I'm trying to get the router recognized as a media server by the PS3 and when I first plugged in the router, which I got tonight, it actually showed up. However, when I went and renamed the router it disappeared and I haven't been able to get it to show up again. The router is playing fine as a media server, I'm able to access the NAS from my PC (Win7) with no problems, but the PS3...nothing. Any suggestions/advice?

Searching through the forum posts, it seems the 66U isn't very good with handling DLNA from earlier this year, is the f/w still not there yet? Would you recommend flashing tomato or another f/w alternative?

Thanks for any help!

Try RMerlin's Custom Firmware

Try the firmware linked here as it may work for you:
http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=7047

His Firmware doesn't change much of the GUI but fixes a lot of the issues with the factory Firmware and you don't have to do any special kind of flashing just download his custom FW and install through the Admin panel of your router.

Thanks for the recommendation, installed merlin's f/w, now it at least shows the router, no luck getting any actual movies/music to show up, though. I'm guessing it's going to be like this for a while, until DLNA gets some love by Asus. Sigh.

Try sharing just a single directory with a few files in it at first. It's possible Minidlna is crashing while scanning due to a corrupted file at some point.

Or it could be the PS3 is acting up - sometimes PS3Media Server shows up, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it and router show up, now neither show up on PS3. Pretty frustrating, bought the router mainly to stream movies around the house. Sigh.

I haven't used DLNA on my PS3 in about two years (having switched first to a WDTV Live, and then to a home-made HTPC based on a Zoltac mini PC), but back then it was working fairly well for me with Mezzmo as the DLNA server.

PS3Media left me pretty unimpressed at the time. If you want to try another free alternative look at Serviio. However I agree that if both MiniDLNA and PS3Media have problem showing up, it must be something else on your network acting up.

If you have an Android or iOS phone/tablet, try running a DLNA client on it (like Plugplayer), and see if they appear more consistently than on the PS3. Or if you have another computer running Windows 7 just see if they show up in Windows Media Player.
