RT-N66u Speed / SIP issues, seeking suggestions

AmbassadorCK

New Around Here
Hello;

I recently bought a RT-n66u and based on many recommendations updgrade soon after getting it to the Merlin newest build 45

That was simple, it ran fine and about as fast as my net connection allows normally showing speed tests that reflected my 10 / 1 Mbps ADSL connection.

After using it for a week my only issue I had that after reading my googled links and talking with my VoIP provider I could not get audio to work with SIP. (Bria 4.1 and Sonetel provider, other SIP software clients as well tried).

Tried SIP Passthrough on and off, port forward suggestions, SIP provider made changes on their side to try and help (not sure exactly what). Could register and dial, other end would ring and pickup but no audio either way.

It all worked fine before changing the router so would seem to be not a issue with my software / os etc (win 8.1 pro).

I finally tried switching to Shibby Tomato and the SIP all works find now, but the speed has dropped down a far amount now getting about 6.5 / 0.5 during various speed test tries.

Have tried various channels, used inSSIDer to check and see what is best around me.. seems channel 11. 20mhz and 40 mhz tried.. no difference.

Any ideas on how I can get both the full speed and SIP working? I would prefer to use Merlin build and don't need the Tomato features really I just want fast and SIP to work fine and I am happy.

If anyone has ideas for settings I should change or should I now try dd-wrt and see if that solves both?

Other details:

  • 2.4 ghz wifi , wifi card does not support 5 ghz
  • normally a few meters max from the router.

If I need to switch back or to another firmware tips on the process to do that would also be appreciated.

Thank you for your time!

What is your speed test method?

A few of the various testing sites like speedtest.net

Tried with each update of firmware, old router etc and showing much slower now .. about 30% on Shibby Tomato tomato-K26USB-1.28.RT-N5x-MIPSR2-121-AIO-64K

If you haven't already, try www.testmy.net. Use the 12G download test and pick a download site fairly close to you. It doesn't use java to do the test...very reliable.
