RT-N66U VPN issue

Netsultants

New Around Here
Hi guys,

I've setup the RT-N66U with VPN.

I'm on the road but seem to have a problem. I'm thinking it's with the ISP or hardware settings on the network I'm on.

First, it seems the RT-N66U is setup correctly. If I connect via 4G though my Ipad it works fine. Further, if I setup my Ipad as a hotspot and connect on my Macbook it works fine.

If I try and connect my Macbook to the VPN through the wifi connection at the place I'm staying I get the " A connection could not be established to the PPP server. Try Reconnecting" error.

So since it works on 4g but not through this wifi connection I'm thinking it has to do with not letting vpn traffic pass. But I thought I'd check here and see what you guys think...

It is certainly a possibility particularly if the hotel blocks video streaming and wants to prevent people from using a VPN connection and then streaming Netflix and by doing this slow down other guest's Internet connection. Many of the hotel's I have stayed in have minimal bandwidth for hundreds of rooms.

Have you tried other WiFi hotspot to determine if the MAC's VPN setup actually works on a stand alone basis?

I haven't been able to try another network yet. This weekend I might have the opportunity to find another hotspot and see. Though those hotspots might restrict traffic as well.

I just didn't know if there was a setting I could tell them about to open it up.

I'm actually at a marina and on my boat tying into the marina wifi. They might be willing to open it if they knew what to do. But I'm not clear on what would need to be open.

I can tell you I can stream video using their wifi. So they are not restricting that.

I use my Ipad 4g hotspot as backup. In this case it helped me determine that the VPN was working.

With some routers there is a setting under the firewall to allow forwarding of VPN packets. Can't remember the actual name of the three settings radio boxes you used to have to check. Used to see this setting on Linksys routers but many current router OS don't include the setting and VPN works fine.

Even if the hotel/wifi provider was attempting to block video streaming and VPN to get around that, couldn't VPN still be used to avoid the block on video streaming (using the VPN tunnel to encapsulate/hide the streaming packets) and the configure the router to use a port other than 1194 to get around the blocking of VPN? (or does the streaming actually end up being negotiated with one connection, then actually done on another, through a known port that can always be blocked?)
