RT68U Weak connexion with OPEN VPN CLIENT

New Around Here
Hi guys

I post today after reading a lot of post about OPEN VPN on my router, and i need your help.

First, i’m sorry for my english, it isn’t perfect, i’m french and i need to improve my english.

I just bought a ASUS RT68U few days ago, because i want to put an OPENVPN CLIENT on it, i check on internet which model was compatible, and i found this one, at a good price.

I have a FIBRE connexion, so it’s fast. When i use NORDVPN on my computer, or in my phone, the connexion speed is full, or near to be at the maximum, this is good.

I bought a router, because i want to use with the VPN.

When i use on the vpn on the router, i got a weak connexion, i just have 30mb/s, on it, and when i use it in my computer, i have 350MB/S.

I saw some post about this subject, and i read about « hardware acceleration », and about turning off the « hardware NAT », or to flash the firmware to get more possibilities.

i finally installed the ASUS-WRT-MERLIN, last version, hopping it ll resolve my problem but it is not.

I turned off the NAT system, still not working.

My question is simple, do you think it’s possible to use OPEN VPN on the router, with full connexion speed? or i need to send it back to the sellers and buy a RT-AC86U or RT-AX88U?

Thanks a lot for yours future answer!

You should send it back for the RT-AC86U or the RT-AX88U which has hardware acceleration for VPN connections. ;)

The speeds you're seeing are exactly what to expect with the much older RT-AC68U.

Keep in mind the two routers suggested above are capable of up to 275Mbps through OpenVPN and this is the best you can get from a consumer router today. You still won’t be able to get the full ISP line speed. Most VPN servers won’t allow speeds over 200Mbps anyway. 350Mbps is the fastest I’ve seen from NordVPN, on a local server in the same city and using x86 hardware.
