I did a search and turned up nothing so pardon me if this is a stupid question, but what does the "sdk5" stand for in some of the Merlin firmware names?

Software development kit.

For unknown reasons the search function inside many forum software/searches within websites just isn't as effective as googling the exact same thing from google itself (especially when using the "site:" operator). So don't worry, you're not a dope. ;)

The chip used by the router is developed by Broadcom. They provide manufacturers with an SDK, which contains sample code, the drivers, support libraries, etc...

Asus switched to a newer version of that code in recent RT-N66U firmwares (6.30, the old one was 5.100).
