Server memory upgrade confusion

I am looking to upgrade the memory on a Dell poweredge R510 server, it is a duel processor unit, so apparently my RAM stack must reflect this to take full advantage of the duel processor, I was wondering if someone can confirm for me that the best RAM configuration in a tri channel machine would be 3 banks of memory for each processor? Is it also true you cannot mix Gb values? I currently have 4 banks with 2Gb each, ideally I would double it to 16, but using the configuration above I would only be able to go up to 12Gb without having to buy a whole new RAM stack?

You can visit www.crucial.com to have it scan your system and give you some options for upgrade. That box supports both Registered and unbuffered RAM. You need to know first whats installed.
