Setup same ip on both sides of asus router

Hi,

I have a job to upgrade a client step by step instead of a quick remove all the currently working gear and build a new solution.
One way would be to setup his new 5300 router with the same ip network on the wan and local lan side. When I do this, I get the message that this is an invalid address on the lan side. Is there a way around this on ASus or other brand routers. Some searches said theres nothing in tcp ip stack to prevent this but it depends on the manufacturers router code.

This is not possible. It's basic networking.

A router "routes" between two different networks. If you wanted the same network on both interfaces you would be creating a network bridge. You can achieve something similar by configuring the 5300 in Access Point mode. Then it would be functioning as a simple switch (bridging both networks) with APs connected to it.

In addition to what Colin said, *EVERY* network interface requires a unique IP address whether they are on the same device or different devices.

Based on your post, I'd also be concerned about your use of subnets. If you are trying to duplicate wan/lan segments, you could also run into routing issues although this could be mitigated depending on your topology.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I know that is not the way to ip things but it would have helped in this case, if possible. I'll be going the access point or bridge way, instead. You know, I used to work with products made by Bridge communications before they were bought by 3Com long ago and far away!
