Single disk NAS - backup solution needed

Simp

New Around Here
Hello,

This will be my first NAS set up and after quite a bit of reading I have come to the decision that RAID is not needed for me as my OS wont be on there so downtime isnt an issue and it would only cause increased HDD failure rate.

I will be storing all my music ect on the NAS which i would then like to back up.

I will probably buy a Synology DS112 + a 2T HDD and would like to back this up with a cheap ish external.

My question is how would I do this. I would want a backup to be made automatically to the external with out the need to turn on a computer. I would also like the backup to have at least two versions of the whole NAS disk so if something gets deleted and a backup takes place i can still recover. I would set a backup to run weekly.

Will the software on the NAS be able to do this for me ?
Will the backup be compressed so i wont need a 4T external for 2 versions?

Also if you think there is something better than DS112 please let me know.

Thanks for your expert advice :)

The Synology will let you schedule backups either to networked rsync targets or external drives. The backup module does not support versioning, but it does support compression.

You can set up two backup jobs, each to a separate attached drive for your two versions.
