Slow speeds downloading from external network

New Around Here
Hi,

I've just recently purchased my rt-n66u last month. I noticed that when I'm on a friend's network and connect to my network over vpn, i can only get 100Kbps download speeds over samba/ ftp/ and scp (thus ruling our file transfer protocol). I realize that the download speed is limited by my ISP's upload speed, but my upload speed is rated at 1Mbps and a speedtest (www.speedtest.net) shows that I'm getting 0.97 Mbps upload speed. I ran an iperf test from my friend's network and I get 1 Mbps in both directions (of course I'm bounded by my friend's ISP upload speed as well). Anyone have any ideas as to why and how I can improve the speed? Some things I tried after I tried asking google:

1. Tested multiple file transfer protocols. See above.
2. Turned off VPN and used the router's AI smart access ftp feature to try and download. Results in speed were the same.
3. Tried a different external network (used LTE on my cell phone).
4. Tried a different vpn server (openvpn on my mac mini which is hard wired to the router)
5. Ensured that jumbo frames were off
6. Turned QoS on
6a. Used automatic mode
6.b Set user defined rules where file transfer ranked highest.

(Incidentally on this note, since QoS enable and disable requires the router to do a reboot of sorts, my write/read speeds to the RAID dropped to 2MBps from 9 MBps over internal wired connections. I had to resolve this by running chkdsk, rebooting the router, and disable/re-enable media server and samba sharing. I suspect that I was bitten some sort of NTFS driver bug in the router. In the end, I got my 9MBps speed back).

One thing that I thought I might try was to plug a computer directly into my modem and do the test, but it seems unnecessary since iperf proved that I'm capable of getting 1Mbps.

Machines in play:
On the external network: Microsoft Surface Pro running Windows 8, iPhone 5
On the internal network: 2 TB 5 disk RAID Array connected to the router formatted as NTFS.
Router: running stock firmware from Asus. Exact version is unknown at this moment since I'm not home, but I ran a firmware update check last month when I bought it.

I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!
