Strange connectivity problem with a 5300 & 68U mesh

My initial setup:

ISP: Sky
Modem: Sky Hub
Router: RT-AC5300 (wired to modem)
Mesh Node: RT-AC68U (wireless -58dBm)
Additional: Sky Booster (wireless)

WiFi was OK in most parts of the property but still struggled to get Sky TV working in some additional rooms.

I have now moved the 68U and Sky Booster into the loft (near eachother) and hard wired them using an 8port Netgear Gigabit switch.

Everything was working great for about an hour, but now I am noticing my devices are not connecting to the main router, they are connecting to the 68U instead.

My iPhone switches from wifi to 4G constantly as well as laptops.

I’m thinking the Sky Booster may be causing an interference, being close to the 68U but it doesn’t explain why the devices keep disconnecting from the 5300 router. Any ideas? Tried a reboot twice, switched phones/laptops on and off too.

Using latest Merlin FW on the 5300.

Why the sky booster?
My Sky Q Mini boxes all connect directly to my Asus routers and nodes.

One box wouldn’t reach so I paired it with a Sky Booster that the engineer left behind. I’m on way to screwfix to pickup 100m Cat6 and connect my sky boxes by ethernet + remove the booster... but I feel the issue with the 5300 might be something else.

Have now run wired connections to both the sky main box and the mini box. They connect and keep disconnecting the internet connection.

Also on a macbook air it sometimes gets an error saying the associated ip is in use on another device.

I also notice my iphone sometimes cycling from wifi to 4G.. is this because of the doubleNAT issue previously discussed?

It won’t be due to the double NAT.

If all your Sky Q boxes are now hard wired you need to fully turn off their Wi-fi in the secret install menu to have them actually behave themselves.

Press the ‘Home’ button on your remote control.
Scroll down to ‘Settings’ and DO NOT press select.
Press ‘001’.
Press ‘Select’
Network > Disable 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-fi

Do this on all the Sky Q boxes, main and mini’s. You may have to reset/reinstall the minis again afterwards so that start using the wired connection.

See what happens after that, I found it vastly improved my Asus Wi-fi afterward as the sky boxes were no longer spewing unwanted Wi-fi signals out.

Now I think about it, the Sky boxes may not like the double NAT. I’d suspect they use UPnP for various services and that’s not going to work very well.
If you don’t care about using the Sky app on your phone you could wire the Sky boxes directly to the Sky router rather than the Asus so they are not double NAT’d, but really it comes down to needing a proper modem again for a clean solution.

I have hard wired to the sky modem instead of the asus router. Tried both ways made no difference so left them in sky modem.

I will disable the wifi from both sky q boxes and report back. It’s my bro in-laws house and doesn’t want to spend if it can be avoided

Not talking big money!

That is cheap, I will let him know.
For now, I disabled the wifi on the boxes and reset everything.

Now it is all working as intended. The sky boxes are connected stable AND my iphone and laptops are no longer cycling between wifi and 4G!

It has definitely made a big improvement to the wifi strength.

Thank you!
