Strange speed problems RT-N56U

New Around Here
Hi
First post on this forum that i enjoyed alot since i found it.
I have 100/25 mbit/s fiber in my home. Static IP via IPoE. Until 2 days ago I had it hardwired to one of the computers and was getting nice speeds 95+/20+.
Since i wanted to connect all my computers to the network i bought a Asus RT-N56U and set it up. Now im getting high latency and REALLY slow speeds at about 28/3 mbit/s. This is hard wired. Wireless I get abit better but only by a few mbits. If I plug the cord straight into the computer again without the router I get 100/25.

Ive tried:
Exchanging the router at the store for another unit
Changing the firmware to Padawan
Firewalls on and off.
QoS on and off
The useful tips in this thread http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=11088
Changing the wires (all cat5e)

Has anyone experienced this before? Its driving me mad. Really like the RT-N56U so it would be a shame to exchange it. Besides I wanna solve it.
Any tips is appreciated.

Thanks
Dr.F

Link gives me a 404 error...

any way....I never had any issue with the N56U....its one of the fastest routers i have ever used....I used the micro build of Padavan firmware......

I have my ISP DSL modem set in bridge mode...and the asus was the one that did the PPPOE connection...and i got my full 50/20.

Never used ipoe....u try using PPPOE instead?....i have no idea how your isp does it....

and it depends on your modem...u dont need the asus router set to a authenticate with your isp if you connect it behind your isp modem. Only if isp modem is in bridge mode.

Edit: Come to think of it...i did run into the lan speed issue once...when things only ran at about 24MBs...I restarted computer and it was back to normal.

There, fixed the link.
Yea most say that its suppost to be very fast. Not for me though :(

With PPPoE I get 25ish down and 4ish up. With IPoE I get closer to 30 so its bad no matter what. I dont have any info from my ISP about having to authencicate so i dubt its needed?

I have turned off/restarted my computer and router at least 15 times while working on the problem. No change.

Have you done anything with your modem? I find that when my ISP has done something on their end, resetting my modem can fix the resulting speed problem. This can also help when you put in a router or change routers.

As a last resort, try turning off both the modem and router for a few minutes, then turn the modem back on and let the lights stabilize on it, then turn on the router, and see if things are better.

If you've already done this stuff, never mind *smile*.

The thing is that i dont have a modem. The connection on my end is just a jack over the door that i connect an ethernet cable to. I guess the gateway is located somewhere in basement that I dont have access to. Ive been chatting with my Isp but they just blame the router. Dont get me wrong, they were helpful but claimed it was nothing on their end. Since I get a good connection when i connect the cable straight into the computer i kinda belive them. Im gonna try to return the router tomorrow and get a diffrent brand and se if there is any change.
Thanks for your suggestions though. I appreciate all help :)

Speeds do tend to be a bit higher when connected directly to the modem as opposed to through a router(but certainly not that big a difference)...and yea..ISP won't help you is you use your own router as opposed to theirs.

If all else fails, just get a gigabit switch and use that instead of a router. Course, then u don't have a wifi ap and NAt firewall etc...

When having problems with a wired connection to a router, it's usually related to one of three possibilities.

1. MTU is incorrect on router
Use the link below to guide you. (Don't forget to add 28)

http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=94&vw=1&articleid=386

2. NAT conflict
Change the Asus routers local IP address to 192.168.27.1

3. Incompatibility issue
Not much you can do there except use different equipment or add equipment

Does this mean that you already have a router as part of your gateway? If that's the case, then you would either put your gateway router in bridge mode (so that it isn't doing routing/DHCP) and your router does the full job, or let the gateway router do the routing/DHCP, and set up your router in AP mode, where it just supplies wireless functionality. I can't really tell what the big picture is from "jack over the door", just taking a guess...maybe you can describe what you're plugging into a little more? Cascading routers does lead to some problems with multiple functionality, like double layer NAT, etc.

Although the post seems a little bit out dated, but I used No 2 addvice and it really helped on RT-N56U (padavan fw) Had some strange speed droppings on wired PC, kinda pulsation...Speed test shows 90mbps, after 5-10 minutes minutes only 20-50 mbps...Changed LAN IP of router, and now it seems quite stable ~80/90 mbps.

Thanks jlake
