Switch for more ports

I need more ports - Asus router has 4 and i need more. I am a newbie - can I use a switch (say 6 or 8 port) one? What is the max number of ports on a switch can I have?

Lastly, what switch is best to go for? I was thinking about unmanaged ones.

Anything up to 48+ ports on a single switch is common. Only really limited by the physical size of the sockets.

If you don't care about features like VLANs, QoS, PoE and just want to add a few extra sockets you might as well go for a basic unmanaged switch.

Keep in mind that one of the switch's Ethernet ports will be used for the uplink from the router and you will have to use one of the Ethernet ports on your router to feed the switch. Therefore if you are currently using all the Ethernet ports on your router, an 8 Port switch only nets you six additional ports. Given the small difference in cost between a 5 Port and 8 Port switch I would go with the larger 8 Port switch.
