Switch: slow download

New Around Here
Hello ... so i have a pretty simple setup: cable modem -> Asus NT-R66U router -> Gigabit Switch -> 3 PCs (1gig NICs).

I have the following problem: if either of the PCs are connected directly to Asus router (using Cat6 cable and 1gb NICs) the download speed of my connection is about 6x faster than if I connect PCs through the Switch and then Switch to the router. I tested speed by using "Lan Speed Test" and writing/reading 1mb files to a remote disk (outside of my LAN).

I tried 3 different gigabit switches: DLink DS-108 (unmanaged), Cisco SG200-08 (managed) and ZyXEL (unmanged)... and the results are pretty much consistent: putting a gigabit switch between the router and PC slows down download speeds about 6 times (while upload speeds is more or less not affected), basically it goes from 20Mbps down to 3Mbps.

I also connected usb drive to Asus router and measured download/upload speeds to this local drive. Same situation again, download (i.e. "read") is about 5x slower through the switch than without it.

All cables are Cat6, tried different lengths and combos etc.

Am i doing something wrong here? 6x hit seems way too much for a gigabit switch.

Thanks

force the port to 1000/full or whatever and then do the same for the switch port. Auto-negotiate can blow at times.

Bullseye! Yep, that was it... disabled auto-negotiate on the switch and set it to 1g/full and everything is good now.
Thanks much
